About Us
Kidneys are vital to our
well-being as they remove toxic wastes and fluids from our body.
Kidney failure is a life-threatening condition as the accumulation
of toxins in the body could lead to death. Dialysis treatment
becomes mandatory to sustain life, in the absence of kidney
transplantation procedure. After malignancy and heart disease,
kidney diseases are the third largest killer of mankind. About
200,000 persons in India go into terminal kidney failure every year.
Millions more suffer lesser forms of kidney disease. The enormous
expenditure incurred in the treatment of kidney problems and kidney
transplantation may be a person's lifetime earning, and in most cases
in India, more than a lifetime's earning.
To respond to this need, Tamilnad
Kidney Research Foundation was
founded in 1993 by Dr. Georgi Abraham along with a group of like-minded
people.
TANKER Foundation has been set up primarily
with the aim of providing financial assistance for underprivileged
patients for dialysis, transplantation, investigation and medication
costs. The Foundation also aims to encourage organ donation at time
of death, so that cadaveric transplantation can benefit needy
patients.
TANKER Foundation had small beginnings and
initially only financial support was offered for poor patients.
Gradually as contributions started coming in, TANKER started its
subsidized dialysis facilities.
The Foundation, even in the absence of its own
premises, had initiated subsidized dialysis facilities first at
Tamilnad Hospitals and then at Sri Ramachandra Medical College &
Research Institute, Porur. Subsequently, with a donation of
Rs.20 lakhs from ICICI Ltd the facilities were shifted to its
present premises donated by Mr. K.V. George. The Rekha
Memorial TANKER Foundation Subsidized Dialysis Unit started functioning from January 1999.This
unit now has 10 Dialysis machines through which 400 dialysis are
done monthly out of which 125 are given free through sponsorships
from individuals & other charitable trusts.
Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation
Ambattur Rotary Subsidized Dialysis Unit was started in 2006, at Ambattur Rotary Hospital with
3 machines. We have added 2 more machinery subsequently. This helps people in and around the
Ambattur area. This has been possible with a generous contribution of
Rs. 20 Lakhs from the ABAN Group in memory of our late trustee RENNY
ABRAHAM and the generosity of the Ambattur Rotary
Club and also the MWRT 10, who donated 1 machine and continues to give 1 free dialysis to our patients.
TANKER along with the help of our goodwill Ambassador,Mr R.S.Suriya opened The TANKER Foundation Madurai Subsidized Dialysis Unit on October 8th,2006. The other donors for the Madurai Project are Pioneer Asia-Sivakasi, Cognizant Foundation-Chennai, Sundaram Finance Limited, Mr Eashwar Krishnan, Mr B.K.Vishwanathan and Sri Rama Trust(T.V.S). We thank them all for their generous contributions. The unit has 5 machines. We do 49226 dialysis a month. 509 patients are given free dialysis.
The Madras West Round Table 10 and The Madras Ladies Circle 2 and TANKER's Goodwill Ambassador Mr. R.S.Suriya have launched the Dialysis A Day (DAD) project with TANKER.
The Madras West Round Table 10 and The Madras Ladies Circle 2 are sponsoring one free dialysis a day each at the Ambattur and Kilpauk units and Mr. Suriya is sponsoring one free dialysis a day at the Madurai Unit. The DAD project was launched on January 1st, 2007.
Fund
Raising
TANKER holds one main fund raising event
annually, which is the Republic Eve TANKER Charity Nite.
This event has taken place every year
from the year of inception. Many local celebrities who support our
cause attend this event and donations are made directly. One of the
highlights of the programme is the music or dance programme that is
usually performed by a survivor of kidney disease or any other major
ailment.
